Alfred Rethel (1816 - 1859). German painter and printmaking, Alfred Rethel is most famous for his fresco cycle of Charlemagne. It was initiated in 1847 but was never finished because controversy ended Rethel’s career before its completion. His wood engraving series, Another Dance of Death is another one of Rethel’s best known works and is similar to Holbein’s work. Death and anarchy are popular themes of his work.
