Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon

Darren Holmes

Darren Holmes

Darren Holmes

Darren Holmes

Born in 1969 in North Bay, Canada, this artist developed very quickly a passion for the immediacy of expression that photography allows. The subjects he portrays are often enveloped in light and texture which seem to evoke ageless voices from times past, interplay between space and subject being an omnipresent quality in his works. Darren often appears as his own subject in his work as well as working with others, which gives his expression an even more personal, solitary feeling. Empty yet eloquent looks, simple and subtle poses, the attitude of his subjects shows little but says much, deepening the mystery which seems to emanate from his imagery. Lines which we normally rely on blur and disappear. Both femininity and masculinity, light and dark, the beautiful and the repellent...these are works of contradiction which make them, somehow, more coherent.
The body of work of this artist remains difficult to define and well beyond words. "I would say that emotion is the only thing that has motivated me to do anything" affirms Darren Holmes, reminding us that his work should be simply felt rather than studied or described.

"Born in 1932, raised and educated in Marseilles, I was seven or eight years old when my first fascination with women began. I was obliged to attend the Opera on Sunday afternoons until the age of twelve, quite an ordeal but the ballet, for me, was a true miracle. There, were beautiful creatures, women who could not exist in this world, floating angels from another dimension. I was in love with them all!

By 1954 I began my career as a photographer. Where I was living, I had no access to examples of photomontages, but at least I could find some of the best work from the Masters of the period. Among them was Peter Basch with his dynamic and action nudes, the sensitive work of John Rawlings, and a rare edition of the superb Betty Biehn who was probably the first fashion model to be photographed nude by the great names in fashion photography: Fernand Fonssagrives, Philip O. Stearns, Frederic Smith, and others. In spite of this isolation, my early works were well received in photo salons and publications abroad."

Richard Avedon

Richard Avedon

Richard Avedon

Jason Brooks

Jason Brooks was born in London, but spent most of his childhood in Brighton on the South coast of England. From an early age he drew and painted avidly and first received freelance commissions in his early teens.
At 19 he moved to London to study graphic design and illustration at St Martin's School of Art. During this period he began traveling widely to Mexico, Guatemala, Turkey, Morocco and around Europe, sketchbook in hand, and in 1992 won the prestigious Vogue/Sotheby's Cecil Beaton Award for fashion illustration.
Next Brooks headed to New York for fresh inspiration before attending the Royal College of Art in London where he concluded his training with a Master of Arts Degree in illustration.
After leaving college Brooks was commissioned to regularly attended fashion weeks in London and New York as well as working as an on the spot fashion illustrator at the Couture Shows in Paris for the Independent Newspaper. Here he drew at the Ateliers of Versace, Valentino and Lacroix and gained valuable experience of the fashion industry.
At this time Brooks also created an identity through posters and promotional material for Pushca, the legendary London club of the 90's which helped popularise his drawings of glamorous clubbers and models.
Brooks was one of the first illustrators to adapt to the new medium of computers. This, combined with his love of drawing, helped to pioneer the new medium and bring about a revolution in the world of illustration as well as a rebirth of what had previously been seen by some as a disappearing art form.
In 1999 Brooks began a series of cd covers for Hedkandi which went on to sell over 4 million albums worldwide. After 50 illustrated covers, in 2005 he decided it was time to move on and now creates music artwork exclusively for the new label Fierce Angel distributed by Universal music.
In 2000 he joined forces with FOLIO, the leading London illustration agency who still represent him worldwide. www.folioart.com.
A range of Jason Brooks products are available under his own label through licensing agreements with BRB in Spain and with Mark's Inc. in Japan who in 2007 will be launching his Jil & Jet character range of stationery and calendars.
His current plans include having more solo exhibitions (he recently exhibited in St Petersburg) and to publish a book of his work.

"My main activity is producing my personal exhibitions which occur several times a year, in the city of Kita-Kyushu (south-west Japan). With my speciality being monochrome gelatin silver prints, I've also come to focus my goals on photographic expression as fine art. I began photography soon after entering high school. At that time I had a great interest in visual arts, and studied both painting and photography at the same time. It was during my high school years that I saw and was profoundly impressed by the works of Wynn Bullock and Edward Weston, and always hoped that one day I would be able to create such works myself.
I have a great interest in people. In particular, it's a person's memory that creates their identity, and therefore I have always created works on the theme of human memory. I believe that in the future as well, I will continue to photograph works on the theme of human memory. Recently, I have begun to photograph Fine Art Nudes. However, it is not only the beauty of the physical human form that I wish to express, but also the mental aspects of heart, mind, and feelings. I hope express Japanese traditional beauty consciousness (eg, philosophy of mutability ) by photography.
I usually use T-Max100 film and T-Max400 film with the zone system. I use cameras ranging from 35mm to 4x5 and I do all my own film processing (use Microdol-x 1:3) and all my own printing. It is a matter of great importance to me. Because I wish express to invisible images, such as human memory, unconsciousness and mood.
I also run a web site called Art Create Photography (http://www.artcreate.com/photo/) . The objective of Art Create is to both introduce to more Japanese people the fine arts of western photographers, and to introduce the fine arts of Japan to the people of western countries. I would be very pleased to hear your impressions or advice on this site."
