Edgar Degas

Edgar Degas
Edgar Degas

Información de Biografías y Vidas.

Edgar Degas (Hilaire Germain Edgar Degas; París, 1834 - 1917).

Sally Mann (born May 1, 1951) is an American photographer. Mann was born in Lexington, Virginia in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. She attended The Putney School, Bennington College and Friends World College, and earned a B.A., summa cum laude, from Hollins College (now Hollins University) and an M.A. in writing.
After graduation Mann became a staff photographer for Washington and Lee University in her hometown. (Her mother ran the university's book store. Her father was the leading physician in town.)
She first achieved prominence with a one-woman exhibition in late 1977 at the Corcoran Galley of Art in Washington, D.C., showing surrealistic images she took of the construction of a new law building at Washington and Lee.
Mann's work has stimulated controversy beginning with her second published collection, At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women (1988). To critics, these portraits "captured the confusing emotions and developing sexual identities of girls at that transitional age, one foot in childhood and one foot in the adult world.", but for many the photographs portray a child's innocence.
Her next collection was Immediate Family in 1992. These images gained notoriety for including nude photographs of her own children. Some critics called her work 'child pornography'. The condemnations of her work, still considered controversial by some, have not hurt her career. Her photographs continue to be shown in and collected by most major American art galleries and museums.
A recent collection of work, entitled What Remains (2005) features dream or nightmare-like images made with the antiquated glass plate process collodion, of rustic scenes in the pictorialist style, some including dead and decaying human bodies. Another series in the same body of work features images of the Antietam battlefield. The book closes with a series of images of Mann's children. Many of the images appear to have been highly manipulated - scratched and otherwise maimed for artistic intent - however this is just a result of the imperfect collodion process. Mann has admitted to not wanting to perfect this process, as she feels the unintentional streaks and scratches add something to her photographs.
Mann's most recent works have been landscapes or "land portraits" of rural areas of Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Virginia. Most of it is untitled, and can be found in a collection called Deep South. These images were photographed using damaged lenses and cameras, creating a ghostlike effect and producing images full of light leaks.
Mann's large black-and-white prints are all shot with an 8x10 large format camera. Mann still lives in Lexington with her husband and three children, Jessie, Emmet, and Virginia.
Her works are included in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Corcoran Gallery of Art, among many others.
Time magazine named Mann its "Photographer of the Year" for 2001. Photos she took have appeared on the cover of The New York Times Magazine twice: first, a picture of her three children for a 1992 feature on her "disturbing work"; and again in 2001, with a self-portrait (which also included her two daughters) for a theme issue on "women looking at women."
She is the subject of a documentary, What Remains which covers her entire artistic career. It premiered at the 2006 Seattle International Film Festival and was accepted at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival

Michael Kenna

Información de About Photography.

Michael Kenna was born in Lancashire, England in 1953, and studied photography at Banbury School of Art before going to the London College of Printing from 1973-6. His carefully composed and exquisitely printed landscapes attracted a great deal of attention in early shows in the UK, but there was little market for landscape photography there, and he made a living from advertising work. In 1977 he moved to San Francisco, where he became Ruth Bernhard's assistant and printer for 8 years. In America he readily found a public who were keen to buy his distinctive landscape work.
Kenna, a hard-working and extremely prolific photographer, has many shows every year, is represented by many galleries around the world, and has pictures in virtually every major collection. As well as the pictures on his own web site, you can also see his work on gallery sites, including the Stephen Wirtz gallery in San Francisco, among the first to show his work in America. His recent shows there include one on the Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station in Nottinghamshire, England, and more of his work from Japan.
One of the more powerful of Kenna's projects is Impossible to Forget: The Nazi Camps Fifty Years After, selected from several thousand images he took in former Nazi concentration and extermination camps in Germany, Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic, Belgium, France, Italy, Holland and Latvia over a twelve-year period. The project was organized by Patrimoine Photographique, Paris and the touring exhibition is currently showing at the Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, PA, USA until April 10, 2005.

Sylvie Botter

Lauri Blank

Lauri Blank
Lauri Blank

Lauri Blank was destined to be a creative soul with a burning passion for art. Raised by an artistic mother who attended design school in NYC, and grandparents that are still performing musicians (well into their 80’s), Lauri was constantly engaged by creativity and artistic expression; the foundation of a future art career.
The world’s first acclaim of this talented artist came when she was just seven. Blank’s Mother, having recognized the talent she possessed at such an early age, submitted Lauri’s sketch of Betsy Ross to the local newspaper’s bicentennial art competition. Her work placed first.
Looking to expand her artistic horizons, Lauri began experimenting with different types of media. A few years later, at the age of 12, Lauri was honored by The Norton Museum of Art who included her three-dimensional painting of a young woman aging slowly in their prestigious national exhibition.Continuing on her path of creative exploration, Lauri became a successful model at 14, still painting whenever she could. Lauri absorbed all the written material she could acquire on the arts. She
spent the next several years honing her skills privately while gracing the covers of magazines, catwalks and advertising campaigns. As is commensurate with most artistic souls, Blank wanted to move away and try something new; also in the field of art and design. Turning her creative sights on the fashion world, Lauri moved to Bogota, Columbia. After establishing her own couture dress design and manufacturing business, it seemed that the canvas beckoned for her return as each day abroad passed.
Lauri returned to the US and embarked on full time painting career, "I felt the need to create something new, each day, whether it was a painting, interior design, or classical music. You couldn’t do that in fashion - once successful, the business becomes more about production and less about creativity.”
As her talent grew, Blank found herself naturally drawn to the imagery and complexities of the human form. She especially focused on the female form, learning to capture its very essence on her canvas. Uninhibited by conventional or formal training, her talent took on an original life of its own. Blank's artwork exhibits an unblemished romantic realism long forgotten by commercially driven, modern day trends. The appeal of her work is timeless. She continues to evolve her passion, taking great care in developing each individual composition. What is most remarkable is that she does not use live models. The images create themselves.
Her talents were immediately recognized by patrons in Washington D.C. and the Miami area, where she accepted numerous important commissions. And then in 1999, Lauri’s career would take a different turn, one that resembled one of the masters she studied for most of her life. Lauri Blank was commissioned to paint the ceiling of an 18th century church in Old Montreal. For months, the artist worked day and night painting the Cathedral’s ceiling while standing on scaffolding that had a five-story drop onto the marble floor below. It was the most magical experience she has ever had and is most proud of this work.
Blank received national coverage within Architectural Digest and her Old Montreal Cathedral work was featured on HGTV. She has been called "The Ft. Lauderdale areas own Michelangelo".
Blank's work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the nation. She receives frequent media attention and has appeared on numerous magazine covers throughout the Miami area. In 2002, Blank was selected as the artist for the 2002 Grammy Awards. Her "Post 911" Grammy work symbolized the patriotism of a nation blended with our love of music.
Lauri’s style of melding the techniques and icons of the old master with today’s cultural ideology, has won her acclaim. Her powerful images, along with her passion and devotion jump off the canvas and transport the viewer into a by-gone era. Her own imitable style, which the artist refers to as “Romantic Figuratism,” brings a sense of peace and reflection to the modern day world. “The passion in my heart…influences and fuels my love of art and my profession” says Blank of her accomplishments.

Doug Heslep

"Upon moving to Fort Myers, Florida in late 1988, I opened my commercial andfashion photography/graphic design studio known as Heslep Productions, Inc. Even though I have enjoyed a successful commercial studio servicing a broadrange of clientele, my most heartfelt desire has always been to be recognized inthe same realm of the most elite of fine artists... photographic, or otherwise. So for years, ongoing and dedicated, in the spare time my business andpersonal life would allow, I have pursued this quest, my need to create.
The first exhibition of my fine art was in 1991 as part of a multi-artist Gallery Exhibit at Sanibel Harbour Resort and Spa in Fort Myers, Florida.
Due to pursuing my commercial studio, thirteen years later came my next.
I have captured many artistic images since that first show, trying to bediversified with what I do create. The Doug Heslep Fine Art Collection hasbeen "works in progress" for a very long time, much longer thanthat first show in 1991... and the journey isn't over yet."

Raymond Ellstad

Raymond Ellstad
Raymond Ellstad

"Growing up absurd, living life without a goal as a surf rat, he soon enough found himself touring southeast Asia at the behest of your government and returning to the fair shores of southern California, just over a year later, glad to be alive and shocked that everyone didn't love him and blamed him personally for the folly of the ruling class in the 60's."
Información de Dancing Brush.

San Diego, California Caricature Artist Raymond Ellstad (as has been stated elsewhere in these pages) was born under a rusty sign on the Island of Staten, in New York, which is actually the borough of Richmond, so you might and could say that he is from New York, N. Y. This was on a brain cloudy day in 1946.
He has lived a desultory life, but the aspect germane to our quest of discovering the whereness of his art breath, is that he attended the Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland Oregon (then known as the Museum Art School), and the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts. In him resides a major talent with a middle brow mind.
Raymond can be and sometimes IS entertaining, which he perceives is currently the nature of your business and would love to entertain you and your guests at your next major or minor event.
