Shag

Shag
Shag

Josh Agle (probably better known as Shag, a contraction of the last two letters of his first name and the first two letters of his last) is a painter, illustrator and designer working in Southern California. His initial intention to establish a career as a commercial illustrator was sidetracked when his original paintings began to garner considerable attention from galleries and collectors. Since his first solo gallery show in 1997, Shag has had successful solo exhibitions in the United States, Europe, Japan and Australia.
The paintings themselves celebrate consumerism and consumption on vividly colored, sharply rendered panels; the characters drink, smoke and eat in lavish, stylish surroundings. But Agle sees the visuals of his work as window-dressing or stage scenery. He’s more concerned with the narrative of the art. “Most of my paintings are set in the middle of a story or situation -- characters are interacting and reacting to each other and to outside events.” Agle doesn't offer too many clues about the stories, preferring that the viewer create his or her own narratives to fit the situations.
Currently Shag paints in a large studio with panoramic views of a wooded valley in the hills above L.A., part of a mid-century modern home which he shares with his wife and two children. He is currently creating paintings for upcoming exhibits in New York, Paris and Tokyo.

Jan Bollaert

Bollaert
Jan Bollaert

Artista belga que pinta cuadros y hace esculturas dentro de lo que el denomina neo-popart.

Información de Studio Art.

Jan Bollaert born in Antwerp (Belgium) 1958. He would have preferred to have grown up during the 1950’s, a period of innocence and huge expectations, of film stars and super heroes. He readily admits his image of that time is fictitious. Although he witnessed the tail end of it, he has no conscious memory of it. He was born too late to achieve his ideal, which was to be young in 1950’s and grown up in the 1960’s. For him, the 1960’s are synonymous to Pop Art and popular culture, a time when life was one huge adventure. He regards Pop Art as the most important post-war art movement. "It is the only art form that shows the relationship between art and society as a whole. It elevates banality to the level of art. It lifts people out of the unbearable lightness of being." This longing for the 1950’s and the vitality of the 1960’s have both left their mark in Jan Bollaert’s paintings, which are pervaded with a sense of humor and nostalgia.
Bollaert combines divergent imagery in his paintings, which are frequently diptychs, kitsch little dogs, angels, comic strip figures, historical characters and antique documents, bronze castings, miscellaneous hardware and other items. There is no direct, logical connection, for a painting is not a rebus. The viewer is allowed total freedom to make their own associations and may attribute their own meaning. Most striking in Bollaert’s work is his strong tendency toward the Baroque, in the stone saints and angels he depicts, but also in the Chinese wallpaper motifs he incorporates into many canvases as background motif. Not to mention the excessively muscled physique of the super heroes who simultaneously hark back to the ‘paradise lost’ of the 1950’s.

Jean-Pierre Salmon

Aaron Hawks

Aaron Hawks

San Francisco, CA ... Aaron Hawks captures a world that combines illusions and sexuality in settings that are reminiscent of his own childhood meanderings. Old, decrepit hotel rooms and run-down buildings set the stage for his potent observations. His photography saturates the observer in stark environments of loss, loneliness, and pain; yet brilliantly evokes the determined human struggle for solace and understanding. Dissecting fantasies from the sexual subconscious and distilling questions of power, pride, and will; Aaron Hawks continues to explore the fringes of the observed.
The secret to Aaron's art isn't just his technical capability or the subconscious interpretation of sexual messages his portraits deliver, but the actual sets, which are hand-built and designed in his warehouse.
From Seattle, Washington, now living in Emeryville, California, Aaron has been photographing for 15 years, honing his skills as a master of the melancholic still. The women in his sets are artists, real sex workers and fetishists whose beauty, grit, intensity, and self-awareness inspire his art, culminating in the untraditional documentation of timeless records of sexual noir.
